Best Residencies in New York

The residency. A time honored musical tradition where a performer or group of performers come back week after week to the same spot and hone their craft for a loyal following. Its all about consistency. Les Paul had one till the day he died. The Roots dabbled this past year as they made NYC their home. Often free or low cost and in a comfortable, chilled out setting, these performances are great ideas for a cheap night out. I am determined to fill up every day of the week with one. Here are my favorites so far:

Tuesday night 10pm - The Rockwood Music Hall
Michael Daves FREE

"The best bluegrass guitar player in New York" plays for free every Tuesday night at 10pm at a great venue. Bring a date, bring a friend, bring your cousin from Georgia who is visiting for the week. This guy's talent will blow you away.

Wednesday 9pm-1am: Jalopy Theater
Roots and Ruckus FREE

Much has been written praising the Jalopy as a folk haven in Brooklyn. Its a bit out of the way but well worth the trek and you won't be disappointed. Feral Foster runs the Wednesday nights here, billed as "Roots and Ruckus". Essentially a variety act, you will see 5-6 top notch folk, anti-folk, old time, blues players in New York.

Thursday 9pm - Rose Live Music
Brooklyn Freestyle Sessions hosted by The Mobius Collective FREE

Some of the best jazz/funk/soul in the city for sure. Keep an eye out for special guests like Matisyahu, Eric Krasno of Soul Live and other big names in the funk community. Beer special of a shot of whiskey and a Brooklyn Lager for 5 dollars ensures a good time.

I know there are more out there. What are some of your favorites?
